I first heard about Autodesk’s AutoCAD when my brother worked at a firm that made architectural models for clients. He would take the client’s design and scan it into the program on his desktop computer, then return the scanned file to the office printer. I would marvel at the intricate details, at the hard work and thought that went into creating a single model, especially since all the draftsmen who made it probably had never seen it. It didn’t occur to me that the program was actually for creating the model, not simply scanning it. My introduction to AutoCAD was during my freshman year at the University of California, Irvine, when I took a 2-D drafting class. The instructor, who was more computer literate than our other professor, gave us an AutoCAD tutorial. I loved it. Not only did it help me build the skills I needed to design in the next class, but AutoCAD was also the first professional-level program I had ever used. I was hooked. After I graduated, I was hired by a company to do CAD work. Over the next 20 years, I learned to build models, draw and edit them, and import others’ drawings for use in my designs. Perhaps it’s no surprise that I’m a fan of CAD programs, or that I ended up at Microsoft as a developer. After all, I started in a company that makes CAD tools. I love the power and ease of use of AutoCAD. However, I also appreciate the ease of use of SketchUp, another app from Autodesk. I haven’t had to reinvent the wheel for every aspect of a design, something I’ve become accustomed to in AutoCAD. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to my designs, but I’m also aware of their limitations. SketchUp lets me get away with a less than perfect design. With that said, I’ve never worked on a project for which I had to ask my colleagues to learn AutoCAD.
