A Quick History of AutoCAD

When the first version of AutoCAD was released in 1982, it was designed to be a graphics workstation software application. The name was derived from “Auto-Cracker”, a derogatory term for the program’s ability to automatically generate drawings. This is still true today, as AutoCAD is capable of creating 2D and 3D drawings without the need for manual input by users.

The 2014 R1 version introduced Autodesk File Assembly (AFA) file format as the native file format for large and complex CAD files.

The three major components of a.afd file are a “body”, a “skin”, and a “skin reference”, which are all text-based self-contained files. The.afd file format has an intentional hierarchical structure to facilitate management, collaboration, and sharing. For example, the body contains the body definition that describes the mechanical, architectural, or civil engineering drawing. The skin is a collection of 2D and 3D views to which the body can be attached. The skin reference is a collection of instances where the views are attached to the body and used together. The body also stores objects used in the drawing. AFA files can be opened by AutoCAD and exported to AutoCAD objects such as drawing layers or drawing sheets, and exported in an AutoCAD XML format for viewing and use in any 3D application. Some products support batch conversion to AFA files, such as View and Modelbuilder for AutoCAD 2010.

AFA files are text-based, which limits the size and number of files. However, they are lightweight compared to several of the previous file formats, and as a result, have reduced run times for most applications.

With the integration of cloud storage, the application runs seamlessly on desktop computers, mobile devices and the cloud, and is accessible from anywhere. A360 Sync enables users to access the same files from multiple devices, and share and collaborate on drawings in real-time.
