When to use ‘wf’ with’self’

I’m working on a small program that requires user input to construct a python command line. Because the command is longer than the line limit, it doesn’t fit very well on one line. I’ve tried splitting the command into two lines and using ‘wf’ to join them. However I can’t seem to figure out when to use’self’ with ‘wf’ and when it won’t work. Here’s the code I’m trying. It’s just a simple example of my problem:
