For Ms Flowers, the climate issue provided a focus for a long-term search. “We wouldn’t consider just doing anything that was short-term and not sustainable,” she says.

She had encountered climate change denialism in a political context, and says she was looking for a model that would deal with denialism, in the same way the social movement that brought down Britain’s nuclear weapons was able to overcome the arguments of the Tories.
