When/How should I use variables in a SQL script in a SQL Server job
I’ve been trying to find information on this and am having a hard time since this isn’t a solved problem.
I have a SQL script that deletes various data over time. I want to ensure that during a time where 2 or more connections are using the database, the script doesn’t delete stuff.
I’ve been trying to use variables to keep track of the amount of connections and whether there are any active cursors.
I’ve read the MSDN document on using variables in SQL, here.
I’ve tried various suggestions I found online for various scenarios, including SET NOCOUNT ON, but can’t get it to work.
If I’m doing this right then my questions are:
Is it good enough to use variables in this case?
When/how should I set these variables? Should I set them in the job (which is where the connection information is) and then read them on each loop through each procedure/select statement? Or should I set them in the script and then just change the connection string so it uses the one set in the variable? If so, how do I maintain the connection string in the script?
Any other comments on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the article you’ve linked to is specifically targeted at a job which is looping through a number of records.
If you aren’t looping through records, and aren’t doing anything terribly complex, the “best” way to handle this is likely to be to add another parameter to your SQL script – the user ID (or session ID or database ID, whatever it is you’re using) of the current connection. Just check to make sure this is the user’s ID (specifically) and not necessarily one of their sessions.
Examples of the use of the parameterised isolation level in TSQL can be found here.
Then, in your stored procedure, you can SELECT count(*) FROM yourTable WHERE SessionID=@MyUserID. If this returns 1, then do nothing. If it returns 0, then delete the records.
