Available on DVD this week and hitting theaters soon, “Saw IV” is one of the few horror flicks in the theaters this summer, and it is one of the best. As with all the previous flicks in the series, the main character, Jigsaw (played by Tobin Bell), has rules. First and foremost is that he must be the only one who survives the game to survive. His game this time is to kill a child by putting her through the “Trap Door”. The player must step onto the trap door and then find the child and hold her there. To capture her and hold her is a near impossible task for Jigsaw. He can’t depend on anyone to do it for him, as he had in the previous films. The child is hidden by numerous traps and he must find her, get her, and then get away before she is found again. The trap door is the most intricate piece of set up in the film and both the child and Jigsaw will have to find their way out without being seen. As difficult as this is, Tobin Bell does an outstanding job as the villain. From the opening scene, it was clear that he was going to be Jigsaw. He is menacing and evil without becoming cruel or hateful, although in this film he is not an accident. Before he takes out the child, he threatens her family, as the game is not going to be fun for someone else. Director Darren Lynn Bousman does a great job of building the suspense in this film, and there is even a twist in the ending which I wasn’t expecting, and it was a good one. I found it interesting to see another version of the Jigsaw game, and I liked how the story focused on the child and the family, and cut away from the killer. Implementing a perceived needs assessment with acute stroke patients’ families. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceived needs of hospital-based acute stroke patients’ families, and the implementation of a perceived needs assessment with families in the acute stroke unit. A self-reported survey was administered to 65 families, every second week for four weeks following admission to the acute stroke unit. The survey comprised questions relating to: (i) perceived needs and reasons for survey administration; (ii) survey administration; (iii) best ways of communicating; and (iv) families’ views of the role of the stroke nurse. Results were analysed using non-parametric methods. A perceived needs assessment was completed by 63 (95.5%) families, and most (87.7%) completed the survey once. The perceived needs identified by families included companionship (76.9%), communication (73.8%), information (70.5%), safety (65.5%), and release of relatives (37.7%). However, families of those who died during the study period were less likely to complete the survey. Interestingly, family members who completed the survey most frequently were those who had been interviewed once. The perceived needs of the families included in the survey are similar to other perceived needs surveys of patients’ families.
