This book provides a comprehensive review of the history and developments of broadband communications and the associated RF engineering, as well as a detailed understanding of the components and subsystems used in these technologies. The broadband market, comprising technologies ranging from ‘pulsed/continuous wave systems’ to very fast Ethernet, with frequency ranges varying from hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz.
This book is divided into 7 parts, Part I: General Concepts, Part II: Radio Frequency Systems, Part III: Transmission Lines, Part IV: Optical Fiber Systems, Part V: Antennas, Part VI: Computer Networks, and Part VII: Other Transmission Techniques.
The book presents explanations of the physical and electrical concepts that are critical to the understanding and operation of broadband systems. It features a number of examples of systems operating at different levels of complexity, from analog to digital, and everything in between.
The history and development of broadband communication and related RF engineering topics, the concepts of broadband communications, and the principles of operation of various broadband components and subsystems.
The text is divided into seven parts. Part I: General Concepts contains a brief history of the development of broadband communications and a treatment of basic RF concepts such as the operation of systems and circuits at high frequencies. In Part II: Radio Frequency Systems, the text explains: the nature and operation of radio frequency (RF) systems; their components and subsystems; the development of coaxial and twisted-pair cables; and the family of RF connectors used in the cables. In Part III: Transmission Lines, the text covers the theory of electromagnetic propagation in various transmission lines, coaxial cables and waveguides. Part IV: Optical Fiber Systems, which covers: principles of operation of optical fiber and the associated components and devices for transmission of data over optical fiber; the materials, structures and operating principles of the glass fiber and its associated fabrication and splicing techniques; and optical connectors. In Part V: Antennas, the text describes: the principles of the design and operation of antennas, the design and properties of antennas and their associated radiating structures, and the techniques for measuring and evaluating the gain and impedance matching of antennas.
