We examined the link between SEC, acting through effects on genes and the environment on cognitive, physiological, and behavioral measures over the adult life span. We found evidence of both gene-environment correlation and gene-environment interaction. Specifically, we found that high SEC were associated with reduced gray matter in medial prefrontal cortex and limbic structures. Subsequently, an interaction was found in how attention is distributed (lower in socially disadvantageous than in socially advantageous environments) and extraversion is expressed (higher in socially advantageous than in socially disadvantageous environments). In addition, we found that high SEC was associated with slowed speed of information processing and slower response time, and a higher propensity to pay attention to emotionally salient stimuli. We propose that early-life SEC exerts a long-term effect and influences brain development and subsequent behavioral performance, to subserve adaptive self-regulatory processes.
