ABOUT JUSTIN MALLARD
Justin Mallard is the studio director of Rage. His previous games include Arena, which was released as part of the Quake series in 1999. In 2004 he co-founded Half-Life: Entropia with Dr. Alexis Kennedy and Peter Molyneux. In early 2008 they started work on the very first build of the game, Prototype, which was highly praised by critics upon release in April 2008. After the release of Prototype, Justin Mallard went on to develop Unkilled, where you play as a zombie dodging the efforts of other players in multiplayer mode. The game was named Best Virtual Reality Game by Edge and was included in Game Informer magazine’s Top 10 Games for the Playstation 3.

I am trying to write a plugin for open-win32
it expects a function prototype to be defined in a CPP file
say hello.cpp contains

and all the extern declarations are defined in a file called public.h
private.h contains

and then in my.c file

and I have to make sure that public.h does not get included in my main c file.
so I cannot define the function in main.c
what can I do?

A:

You can only define extern and static functions in headers. If you want to put the function prototype into a separate file (hello.h), you need to use extern “C”, see the Standard, Annex D, 8.1-2:

Each object that has external linkage (8.3.2) shall be declared in a header of the same name
in a separate translation unit, before any other code in the same unit. The
object shall be defined in exactly one translation unit, with the macro
extern. The member of a structure with external linkage shall be defined
in the same translation unit as the structure.

If you don’t want to use extern “C”, then just define the function in the header:
