Donut County is a simple, yet charming puzzle platformer set in an adorable, minimalist world. You play as Tim, a man with an artistic streak, who wakes up in a freak snow storm in his home town. He takes his walk as a blizzard slowly engulfs his hometown and is found by a lady ambulance. She takes him to a hospital, where he recovers from his ordeal.
As you make your way around town, you are approached by various products that have fallen off of the roof and into Donut County, but the things are more than a little strange. The most impactful and important of these are referred to as “cereal” and “candy”. The former add items to your inventory (as well as scare off monsters), and the latter allow you to interact with the world and also provide hints to where to go next.
Donut County is a short but sweet game that lives up to its name. Being an isolated experience the puzzles are not that hard, but they are uniquely hard. Each level has a goal, and the solution to the puzzle is usually hidden out of sight, allowing you to solve the level easily. The biggest challenges are spatial reasoning, and if you do not think ahead, you will get stuck. But, once you get to that part of the level, the solution is usually easy to spot.
I played through the game on the PC, and it was originally released on Playstation 4, but this release also includes both original and remastered content for the consoles. The graphics are simple and pixelated, which fits the atmosphere of the game, and help create the sense of nostalgia for gamers who grew up in the eighties and nineties.
The music is wonderfully selected to set the tone of the game. The soundtrack is composed for a movie that is never shown in the game, but it is very prominent in the backstory. It is cute and fitting, adding to the feelings of nostalgia and whimsy.
