    : How Fact Finders In Law Enforcement Work And How Police Can Learn From Them To Better Run Operations

    Not
    long ago a reader of this blog asked how to know whether a
    fellow law enforcement officer is a fact finder or is simply
    criminologist with a police hat (i.e. someone who has much more
    experience than a rookie but not enough to be an expert).

    It
    so happens that a recent visit to Baltimore City Hall reminded me
    of this so while I was there I decided to take some of the
    questioner’s on-line survey paper and ask friends to fill it in.

    This
    is the report I received. What follows is a list of five questions
    that I posed to my “homies” and are drawn from six questions on
    the survey cover sheet.

    Here’s
    my list:

    So
    you’re an expert.. What’s your job? And what brought you to
    this?

    Do
    you find yourself often trying to find truth in or guide police
    management and decision making?

    Does
    your job occasionally bring you into contact with facts in an
    info-fuelled police and courts system or process?

    If
    you can imagine it.. Is it interesting?

    What
    are the most pressing research/study topics that you need
    addressed?

    If
    you were to be interviewed by a writer of a book or magazine
    article on one or more of these topics.. What would you say?

    Here’s
    where the answers came from. For brevity I limited my comments
    to the first two questions to three sentences for each.

    The
    first question “So you’re an expert.. What’s your job” is an
    unusually good starting point. For one, there’s no such thing.
    Everybody’s job description is different, but I would call most
    facts finders on scene of an incident, crime scene or investigation
    field jobs or Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) of one.

    That’s
    the kind of gig that I have — one that places a premium on the
    truth and on bringing as much of it to light as needed to aid in
    identifying and understanding the criminal behaviour.

    I never did get the satisfaction of beating the game. You can find all the secret doors and solutions to the puzzles, but there is no way to win. This was a fun romp through a humorous setting full of monsters and traps.

    NY House OKs Gay Marriage Bill: Republican Leader Slams Recess

    The New York legislature passed a gay marriage bill today, reported The Associated Press.

    House lawmakers took up the measure — called the Freedom to Marry Act — late on Tuesday and passed it with two votes after a 90-minute debate, reported the AP. The two dissenting Democrats voted for the measure. The bill makes New York the 11th state to legalize gay marriage.

    State Representative Tom Duane, who sponsored the bill, said the marriage legislation is a matter of fairness.

    “My concern is that the state as a whole is not being treated fairly,” said Duane. “If you are a person who wants to marry someone of the same sex, we should be able to allow that to occur.”

    Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, lawmakers could vote as early as today on a similar bill.
