I have a const char* string and I need to do arithmetic on it, and have it return the character post-arithmetic.

At the end of the day the char* passed to a function is an array. It has size 1. There’s no way for you to modify a char* which points to some memory at an arbitrary offset. If you want to modify an array you need to write the function. If you want to change a specific element you can make a function that takes the array, the offset and the new value.
