The magazine offers a perspective on the Newtown school shootings that is quite different than what we usually see — which is a typical perspective. It is almost entirely negative. The lead and back page articles are entirely about the Newtown shootings, what we don’t know, and what we will never know because of how the shooter acted. Most of it is about the recovery effort. The USAToday article is about David Rose’s book The Case For Faith. No one has an opinion about what happened, but the media is asking why did it happen. That is actually a good example of what we’re doing here at the First Things blog and the online magazine, where we treat social issues from a Christian perspective. We’re not trying to disparage anyone, but to take the perspective of a Christian, who sees the need for true peace and true healing.
