What’s the correct way to tell tar to skip these hard links? I need these to be treated just like regular files, which means no hard linking.

A:

–hard-links-on-existing-files is a helper argument of tar’s –info-level 6 option, not an option itself. Its only purpose is to teach tar that your tarball contains hard links to files that are no longer present, so that it can still skip them when extracting.
It turns out that –info-level 6 is documented in the info-level option manpage, which the –help and the –version don’t seem to tell about, and might have hidden from a normal man tar. Using –info-level 0 disables this feature, so as to display the hard links in their full glory.
The man tar page describes the key arguments as:

-x, –exclude=PATTERN skip files matching the shell PATTERN
-l, –links keep hard links to existing files
-t, –time=FREQ list directories sorted by creation time
-G, –group=ID
