Dating apps and sites have popularized an interconnectedness that once existed in the form of street-corner liaisons, an expansion of which has been the rise of Instagram, where it’s nearly impossible to interact online without swiping right or left—or, in the case of online dating sites, swiping left or right for hours on end. The endless cycle of the swipe-to-like/not-like has changed the way people view and judge their friends, family, and maybe even their own personality based on social media.

Still, it paints a pretty clear picture of what happens to a lot of people’s time, and let’s just say that roughly 80 percent of the time spent on dating websites and apps could be saved.

I’ve been on one-night-stands for years, and even in my most awkward date, I never felt like I couldn’t win over anyone—whether it was the guy at the movies or the dude who spent the night on a porch swing. Learn what you can about the people you’re about to meet, and get the 411 on their past relationships. When you meet someone, you don’t have to be a total creep, but you can’t be completely clueless, either. If you’ve never met that person’s ex, at least learn their last name.
