Jupiter Hell is a turn-based roguelike game in the tradition of Earthbound and Super Metroid. Control a merc of unknown origin, who wants to fulfill an ancient prophecy that will free mankind from the shackles of Hell. The first step to achieving this end is to save as many innocents as possible, and then dig into the planet’s treacherous depths to make your way through labyrinthine tunnels, and wipe out a variety of enemy types. About Hijinx StudiosHijinx Studios is an indie group from Salem, Oregon with about 20 programmers and one designer. We’ve been hard at work on our strategy game Jupiter Hell since early 2012, but because of the shape our game is taking, it has been extremely difficult to see Jupiter Hell come to life.   Celestials are an interesting bunch. It’s almost like you have to have an unusual skill set to be a Celestial and it’s even harder to get an exotic weapon in the hands of a Celestial. Don’t get me wrong, we have plenty of both. But, I’m not sure about the “almost,” anymore.

  There was a time before the arrival of the Founding Families when the citizens were not all categorized into a specific domain. But, as civilization became more sophisticated they eventually divided themselves into six individual subgroups. The six domains are (Basic, Prehistoric, Classic, Modern, Cosmological, and Prograde) and each have their own etiquette, specializations, and further classifications. Think of the nobility of the Old Kingdom in Egypt; the nobility of the Greek Greeks; the nobility of the Mayans of Central America; etc. It’s a bit of a divide/conquer thing once you get past the Romans and into the Middle Ages.

  I’ve been told by more than one person that there’s an “alienation” factor between these individuals. You could basically make a case for such a division. To put it in terms we’re used to, let’s say there are six subgroups of people within a community and they sort of know they’re subgroups, but they really don’t see themselves as members of one subset over the other. They don’t seek out interaction with those of their own ilk. And since most people spend the lion’s share of their time at work, in school, or with their immediate family, they live the “community” or “sphere” life of their respective organization. Or, you have this small, elite subset of individuals that enjoy multi-cultural interactions and really set themselves apart from the community within which they exist.

  But, being an agent of cultural, racial, and communication diversity between these two types of societies, one would think that the situation would get better over time. Well, with help it does.
