Photoshop’s default features are pretty much the equivalent of the features found in the easy to use free editors, such as GIMP. The following sections give you a little taste of Photoshop’s power.
Creating a new document
Before you can start editing an image, you must create a new document. You do this by clicking the New Image button that appears in the main menu. You create new documents in layers. Each layer is a snapshot of the pixels in an image; when you move a layer up in the stacking order, you see only the part of the image that was visible before.
The New Image dialog, as shown in Figure 1-1, opens with a blank white canvas ready for your image. It has a white border, a grid, and a New Layer drop-down menu with the names of the existing layers.

After you click OK, your new image appears in the left window. Any pixel color settings are initially available, but you can modify color settings by choosing Layer from the Layer menu.
Although you’re not limited to editable layers, the default layers are treated as floating guides. These floating layers, known as guides, appear automatically when you switch between modes and are usually set to the white color. If you want to change the color, you can open the Layer menu and choose Guides (see Figure 1-2) from the panel on the right of the dialog box.

The layer panel in Photoshop has three areas:
• The front-most area is the active layer and contains the settings for that layer. You can change the opacity of a layer, but you can’t move a layer. You can’t see any of the other layers, just the active layer.

Start Adobe Photoshop Elements
You open Photoshop Elements from the Start Menu as in any other Windows program.
When opening Photoshop Elements, it will ask you to select which type of project to open.
You can create simple pictures with basic editing tools or start advanced projects.
For the beginner or for people who want to learn, we suggest starting with the Learn section.
1. Add a New Document
Choose File > New to add a new blank document.
In Elements 11, on the Tools tab is the option to create a new document. On the old tool bar, is the option to create a new document at the top.
2. Open a New Image
Choose File > Open, or if you are opening an existing file, click on the File name in the top right corner.
In Windows 10, you can open files by clicking the file name in the top right corner of the open and save window.
The open image dialog box appears. You can also open a new image from your file browser by clicking the folder icon in the bottom left corner or by double-clicking on an image file in your file browser.
The image file must be in a format that Photoshop Elements can import. It must have a resolution of at least 300 DPI and be one of the following file types: RAW, JPEG, JPEG 2000, or GIF. Choose OK to open the image in Photoshop Elements.
3. Open an Existing File
Choose File > Open and navigate to the image you want to open.
In Elements 11, click the Open button that appears in the top right corner when you have an image selected.
4. Save an Image
Choose File > Save to save your image.
Choose the file format that you want.
In Windows 10, you can save files by clicking the Save button that appears in the top right corner when you have an image selected.
You can also save files by clicking the Save icon at the top.
5. File Browser
The File Browser shows file information, allows you to open and close files and reload images in your library.
In Windows 10, the file browser is replaced with the folder icon.
In Elements 11, click the Finder icon in the top right corner to open the File Browser.
In previous versions of Photoshop Elements, you opened the file browser from the bottom of the program window.
